JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - An emotional wreath ceremony took place on Friday morning in downtown Jacksonville.

The Hyatt Regency has been hosting the national convention of the Vietnam Veterans of America this week.

It is the first time the convention has even been held in Florida.

As part of the festivities, veterans and supporters gathered on the river walk in front of the hotel at 7 a.m. Friday.

Many of them wore red, white or blue and held American flags or other patriotic items.

They also sang "Amazing Grace" and held a moment of silence before a flowered wreath was thrown into the St. Johns River.

Members of the local honor guard preceded the wreath as it was walked to the waterfront.

The ceremony was meant to memorialize the lives of all POW/MIA soldiers who fought in or gave their life during Vietnam.

Bill Byrns of Orange Park survived 10 months as a prisoner of war and said it was his faith in God that helped him and his family survive.

"We were trained well by the military to do this, be a POW. But it's our faith in the Lord that got us through it. Cause you got the spiritual man, physical man and the mental. The military trains you mentally and physically," he said.

The convention wraps up Saturday.

Subject: Chapter 1084 St. Augustine

Well folks, John McGinty along with the help of 1046, 1048 and 1059, accomplished his goal of having a Chapter by Convention. We turned the Start Up Package at the Convention and got word today they are our newest Chapter 1084. Great job!!!  Let's all give them any help they may need getting started. Give them a few days to get their breath then when they have meetings, attend if you can and welcome them to the Greatest Council in VVA.

We should be adding up to 4 new Chapters by November Council meeting (Nassau County, Ocala, OKeechobee and Space Coast). We are still in the weaning stages for Gainesville and Boca/Delray

Remember every member can get one and every new member knows others. By reaching out we can help more Brothers and Sisters who don't know they are not alone.

posted Jun 7, 2013, 12:42 PM by Rod Phillips

Chapter 522 held a fundraising event on Sun-day, May 26th at the Publix store located in the Booker Creek shopping center on East Lake Road in Palm Harbor. The event took place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. under idal weather conditions. Four members of the chapter volunteered for the event - Joe Ellenberger (event coordinator), Doc Goodfellow, Mike Bousher, and Dick Ammon. We are extremely pleased to report that the event established new records for the chapter in terms of donations received for a single event and in rela-tionship to the total man hours devoted for the event. Joe will provide a financial recap at our June meeting. The five unique campaign buttons purchased last year continue to be very popular with our donors. The chapter would like to extend our thanks to the manager at the Publix store for providing us with the opportunity to conduct this event. The funds re-ceived will be used to support our primary mission of serving local veterans.
